Due to the nature of the movies and the then-current Columbine High School massacre, this led to long-standing (and false) rumors that the movies were banned in the US. The Battle Royale movies, which came out in 20 in their native Japan, were not given an official release in America until 2012.That being said, piracy was more or less legalized/rendered more tolerated in Russia after that move, and some Russian theaters screened pirated HD versions of them taken from HBO Max (no word on how they were dubbed has emerged). Other American film studios followed suit, resulting in Russian audiences missing out on, among other things, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore and Turning Red alongside The Batman, and the same for their distribution on home video. In reaction to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia ordered by Vladimir Putin in February 2022, WarnerMedia decided not to release The Batman in Russia. As it stands now, Disney Blu-ray 3D releases for the US and Canada are indefinitely suspended, but fortunately pretty much all of their international Blu-ray 3D releases are region free and playable on all Blu-ray players, and importing them is barely more expensive, if at all, than what a domestic release would have cost. That Nickelodeon shows were a very hard sell in the Japanese market probably also plays a factor. The "Roxy Hunter" movies have a hard time getting licensed to Japan, due to its similarities to Heartcatch Precure.
